a research biologist.  She changed to law as a way to use more of her “people” skills along with her academic achievements. Her legal career has frequently involved the medical community and handling medical issues, including personal injury cases, elder and dependent adult abuse cases, medical malpractice cases, and interfacing with doctors, nurses and hospital personnel.  Her dedication to service, her public speaking skills, and the combination of a science background and love of all things medical, have been significant assets in her successful career. 

Marilyn Smith

Marilyn M. Smith is a native of Los Angeles and a graduate of both the University of Southern California (Bachelor of Arts) and the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law (Juris Doctor). 


Marilyn is a member of the California Bar and an accomplished civil trial lawyer.  She is also a trusted personal legal advisor in the community.

Marilyn joined the CAS Board in part due to her commitment to helping the most vulnerable of our society, and providing assistance to those in need.


She is the owner of a busy private practice law firm in Pasadena, California, and specializes in personal-based civil litigation, including elder law, elder/dependent adult abuse, family law and contested conservatorship cases.  Marilyn has specialized training in mental health and substance abuse issues which arise frequently in the cases she handles.

Marilyn has been recognized as a Super Lawyer for 2020 (an organization recognizing only the top 5% of lawyers), and has been voted a Pasadena Top Attorney for each year from 2010-2018.  She is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Pasadena Bar Association, and Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.  She was admitted to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates, an organization which confers membership on courtroom lawyers with verified significant trial experience.

Prior to joining the CAS Board in 2017, she served on the Board of Directors of Pasadena-based 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the preservation and performance of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. 

Ms. Smith also is a member of the La Canada Chamber of Commerce and serves as the Vice-Chair of the La Canada Public Safety Commission.
